A mobile visit is less dramatic than people expect. The van arrives with your glass already on a padded rack, along with the urethane, primer, new mouldings and clips for that specific car, and a vacuum, and the technician works from the ground beside the vehicle. Nothing needs your power or your water. On a windshield the old pane comes out, the pinchweld is cut back and primed, the new glass is set on a fresh continuous bead, and then the car simply stands where it is until the adhesive reaches safe drive-away strength, which is the part that suits a driveway, because the car is already home. A chip fill is half an hour end to end. A door glass is about an hour, most of it vacuuming.
What decides whether a mobile job goes well is nearly always access and weather, and both are knowable in advance. The car needs to be on something flat with a clear metre on the working side and room to swing a windshield in without a fence in the way. The glass needs to be dry, and a car parked under a tree after overnight rain is not dry at eight in the morning even when the road is. And the temperature needs to be reasonable, because urethane cures more slowly as it drops and the safe drive-away time stretches with it. Bear is our steadiest mobile territory and the reason is architectural. The subdivisions off Route 7, Route 40 and Wrangle Hill Road were laid out around cars, with two-car driveways, wide cul-de-sac heads a van can turn in, and visitor bays sitting empty on a weekday morning. Nine times out of ten the technician can park directly behind the vehicle and work with every door open. The exception is the apartment and townhouse blocks along Route 40, where spaces are assigned, tight, and often nose-in against a kerb with a lamp post on one side. For those we ask you to move the car to a corner bay or the end of a row before we arrive, or we book the bay in New Castle instead. It is fifteen minutes and it removes the problem entirely.
